Local
Student Wins Regional Lumber Essay Contest
The
Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA) today
announced that Grayson Barker, a fourth grader at Central
Elementary School in Statesville, won the 2005 National Forest
Products Week Regional Essay Contest. As the regional winner,
Grayson receives a $1000 U.S. Savings Bond from the Southeastern
Lumber Manufacturers Association.
Godfrey
Lumber Company, Inc., the local sponsor of the contest, selected
Grayson's essay, entitled, "What would we do without
Wood?" as the winning essay for his class. It was then
submitted to SLMA for consideration in the regional contest
and was chosen as the winner from many essays from across
the Southeastern United States. Two other fourth grade classes
from Central Elementary School participated in the contest.
Local winners from those classes were Courtney Cox and Kyle
Mehl. Each winner received a $50 bond from Godfrey Lumber.
Godfrey
Lumber has sponsored a local essay contest in recognition
of National Forest Products Week for the past 3 years. This
was SLMA's third year sponsoring a regional contest. Entrants
were asked to write one page, minimum, on what life might
be like if there were no products containing wood or wood
products.
"We
had so many wonderful essays to choose from it was
a difficult decision for us," said Steve Rountree, President
of the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association. "Grayson
very creatively portrayed what he felt like a day with no
forest products might be like, and I think he fully understands
the enormous impact that the forest products have on our day-to-day
lives."

Scouts thank Godfrey Lumber
On behalf
of Cub Scout Day Camp, I would like to extend a big THANK
YOU for donating lumber to our Day Camp. Some of it is already
cut up to be part of this year's stool project. And, since
you gave us so much, I now also have enough for next year's
project.
Thank
you again for your help and generosity.
Sincerely,
T. Elmquist

Day Centers. The money was used to purchase new rugs for the

chips and mulch for the playground area.

cars or position won't make a difference to a soul. But kindness
shown to a child can last for generations. Godfrey Lumber
